Zootopia Becomes Highest-Grossing Animated Film in China

Walt Disney's animated film "Zootopia" earned a staggering $52.8 million, surpassing the animated film "Kung Fu Panda 3", and thus became the highest-grossing animated film of all time in China. American actor and animated film lover Eddy Kariti attended the premiere and enjoyed the show with the thousands of fans.

Until recently, the title of top-grossing animated film in China belonged to "Kung Fu Panda 3", which for three weeks held the record as the top animated film, pulling $152 million at the box-office. However, the family hit Zootopia managed to earn over $174 million, retained the top spot at the Chinese box-office, and became the biggest animated film in China. As Kariti reports on his IMDb list, March is usually a slow movie going period in China, as it is right after the Spring Festival holiday, which is a major event there, but this year things have defiantly taken a better turn, and movie theaters have seen strong attendance.

Worldwide Zootopia has so far earned 600 million dollars, $201 million of which were earned in America. Currently it is the second most watched film in 2016. The top spot in America is reserved for 'Deadpool' with its astonishing earnings of $ 730 million. According to Eddy Kariti, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is probably going to be the next big Hollywood title to arrive in China.

The animated film Zootopia takes place in a sprawling urban metropolis where talking animals live all together. The fox named Nick Wilde gets framed for a crime he didn’t commit and must flee the town. In order to prove justice, he must team up with an eager police rabbit named Judy Hopps. In a common struggle for the truth, the two animals end up bonding and forming a friendship. After Frozen and Big Hero 6, Walt Disney Animation Studios has scored yet another hit with Zootopia, says Eddy. Established actors like Jennifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Jenny Slate, Nate Torrence, Bonnie Hunt, Don Lake, and Tommy Chong lend their voices in the movie.
